All negative emotion is expressed as flexion.
Moshe Feldenkrais
If you suffer from stress, trauma, depression or abuse, your body (and all its systems) respond to it. Somatic Therapy helps to release that tension and bring the body back into homeostasis. Together with the therapist, you learn to tune into your physical being and to listen to the signs your body is already giving you. These signs are usually expressed as muscular pain, stiffness, limited movement range, indigestion, irritability and fatigue.
Clinical conditions for which a psychosomatic etiology is common:
Chronic pain syndromes: tension headaches, migraine headaches, lower back pain, neck pain, whiplash, fibromyalgia, temporomandibular joint syndrome, chronic abdominal and pelvic pain syndromes
Autonomic Nervous System related disorders: irritable bowel syndrome, interstitial cystitis, postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, reflex sympathetic dystrophy, functional dyspepsia
Neurological syndromes: insomnia, chronic fatigue, paresthesias, tinnitus
Some benefits of Somatic Therapy:
- Facilitates deep relaxation and calms the nervous system
- Reduces stress (psychological and emotional)
- Improves the immune system
- Teaches awareness and noticing techniques leading to deeper self-understanding
- Encourages the resolution of imbalances through realignment work
- Softens stiffness in the fascia and connective tissue.
- Increases muscle flexibility
- Creates mobility in the joints (increasing synovial fluid and alleviating symptoms of arthritis and osteoporosis)
- Improves blood and lymph circulation
- Increases vitality
- Restores body alignment and balances major muscle groups
- Opens blockages in the musculoskeletal, respiratory, endocrine and other body systems
- Rebalances the body' s energy
- Encourages mindfullness in daily life
- Empowers you in your personal healing process through knowledge about your body, awareness techniques and self-care routines
What should I expect:
Somatic Therapy includes somatic bodywork and movement care. Each treatment is tailor made to your needs and is attentive to your specific processes.
During the first session we will discuss your concerns and together draw up a therapy plan. Each treatment package consists of a minimum of 5 sessions over a period of 10 weeks. Once the initial treatment is over, you discuss your process with the therapist and together decide how to proceed. With more complex concerns another 5 sessions will most likely be recommended. With simpler concerns resolution may be found after the initial treatment package is complete.
You can expect:
- to be listened to with attentiveness and genuine care
- to be in continued, open dialogue with the therapist about your process during the entire treatment period
- to 'check in' with the therapist each week about how you are feeling physically and emotionally.
- to receive feedback about what the therapist notices throughout the therapy session
- to receive tips on what to do between sessions to help the healing process
One sessions may include a blend of the following:
1. awareness exercises to notice patterns (postural as well as thought) and learn to recognise physical sensations
2. hands-on somatic bodywork to release muscular and psychophysical tension
3. movement excercises using imagery to attain specific somatic experiences
4. rehabilitation exercises and movement re-education
5. alignment and postural work
6. Recognising triggers
7. Mentoring in postive coping strategies for the stress-related physiological responses to triggers
Movement for self care
This begins with awareness excercises to help you learn to read the signs your body is already giving you. You learn to differentiate physical sensations, recognise pain-inducing triggers and habits and become aware of tension. Together we create a movement plan which you can follow on your own at home, to sustain the wellbeing you experience during the therapy sessions. The movements are simple and will allow you to find a sense of relaxation and empowerment in your own healing process. These sessions are a step towards independence from the therapy. We work with cues and imagery, triggering the nervous system to remember sensations you experienced during the treatment. When required we may include gentle stretching and strengthening work.
Somatic body-work
This is a healing technique, which uses a blend of massage therapy techniques to release muscular, nervous and energetic tension. It is practiced in full clothing. There is attentiveness to 'trigger' areas and light touch and indirect techniques are used to help free up tension around and within these places. Cranio-sacral work, myo-fascial technqiues, and visceral work and all used in combimnation with joint mobility work to gently soften and open up the body. As an after affect the fluid systems are also effected redcuing congestion and enabaling a better flow of blood, lymph and cerebro-spinal fluid.
How will my case be managed?
1. We will work to treat the symptoms you report and that are observed
2. You will receive advice on managing stressors
3. you will receive guiding and mentoring stress-related responses towards positive coping behaviours and strategies
